Cascara sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana) is a shrub native to western North America whose bark is processed for medicinal purposes. Cascara sagrada contains compounds called anthraquinones that have powerful laxative effects.

Not only is Cascara used as a laxative for constipation, but also as a treatment for gallstones, liver ailments, and cancer. Some people use it as a “bitter tonic.”

In foods and beverages, a bitterless extract of cascara is sometimes used as a flavoring agent.
